Isshin-Ryu Karate

Weapons training is part of the Isshin-Ryu curriculum.

More and more people are turning to martial arts training every day.

Isshin-Ryu Karate is an Okinawan martial art that emphasizes stand-up defenses and strikes. The formal exercises and reviews help students develop precise striking and movement applications. From this basis our goal is to help each student fully understand the many facets of martial arts and how to apply them to every day life. Each of us is different in our experiences and abilities. A good martial arts program will guide students to discover their strengths and weaknesses, and work with them.

Another important distinction is what lies beyond the basics. While stand-up training is great, at some point the instructor must expose his/her students to groundfighting. While groundfighting is great to major in, a student also needs to know how to move and strike in a stand-up fight. Then there are also weapon defenses, throws, take-downs, joint locks, etc.

The instructors at Sierra Dojo have spent the better part of their lives in honing their skills as martial artists and as instructors. We have a solid foundation in one art, with minors in complementary arts. This enables us to give our students a broad understanding of how to handle whatever comes their way.

Our dojo is a member of the Order of Isshin-Ryu, an organization formed in 1971 by Master Toby Cooling.
